Facial Feature Studies
Graphite on Paper
A classic observational drawing exercise isolating individual facial features. The student demonstrates a strong grasp of value and shading—the eyes show careful attention to iris highlights and lash detail, while the lips have nice tonal gradation capturing the volume difference between the upper and lower lip.
The diagonal split-face composition in the center-right panel is a clever layout choice that adds visual interest. The ear study handles the complex folds of cartilage convincingly—typically one of the harder features for students to render. Throughout, the student builds form through light and shadow with confidence.
Día de los Muertos — La Catrina
Oil Pastel
A vibrant cultural illustration with strong color saturation. The student clearly researched the tradition—La Catrina, papel picado banners, marigolds, and an alebrije-inspired sugar skull cat are all present and accurately rendered.
The color palette is bold and deliberate: the blue dress against the purple-to-black gradient background creates real depth. The cat character adds personality and charm. The pastel layering is dense and well-burnished, especially in the background transitions from deep purple to black.
Leopard & Floral Split
Graphite, Oil Pastel & Ink
The most ambitious piece compositionally. The monochrome-to-color split is a popular concept, but this student executes it with skill—the graphite leopard on the left has convincing spotted texture and facial structure, while the right side explodes with vibrant oil pastel flowers.
Black-and-white ink line-art leaves act as a transitional element bridging the two halves, preventing the split from feeling abrupt. The floral section shows strong layering and depth, with hibiscus and plumeria-like blooms rendered in bold pinks, oranges, and purples.
Overall Assessment
This student is comfortable across multiple media—graphite, oil pastel, and ink line work—and shows strong observational skills, understanding of value, and bold color choices. The pieces demonstrate engagement with realism, cultural art history, and mixed-media composition, with a level of care and ambition that stands out.
